Meditation? What For?

Meditation? What For?

Did you know that meditating just 10-20 minutes a day enhances the body’s immune system, increases energy, and reduces stress?

One of the most common complaints I hear from  patients is low energy and high stress.  Most of us lead a very fast-paced lifestyle.  The thought of slowing down for even a minute to close our eyes and take a deep breath seems inconvenient.  Creating balance is key to living a happy and healthy life and mediation can serve as the bridge that will move you from a state of high stress to a knowing that everything will be ok.

The human body is amazingly resilient in that it has the ability to adapt to stressful circumstances.  However, chronic stress may be the reason you never really feel optimal.  The body interprets stress as a need to survive.   Long-term stress creates a constant supply of adrenaline and cortisol pumping through your system.  These stress hormones can disrupt almost all of your body’s processes and can lead to digestive problems, inflammation, sleep problems, weight gain, memory problems, inability to concentrate, and heart disease.

According to Mayo Clinic, research suggests the Emotional Benefits of Meditation include:

  • Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
  •  Building skills to manage your stress
  •  Increasing self-awareness
  •  Focusing on the present
  • Reducing negative emotions

With that in mind, some research also suggests that Meditation may help such conditions as:

  • Allergies
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Asthma
  • Binge eating
  • Cancer
  •  Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Pain
  • Sleep problems
  • Substance abuse

So why mediate? Because you deserve to be healthy and happy!  Can you give yourself permission to take 10 minutes to sit back, relax, close your eyes, and breathe?  Your mind and body will thank you for it.
